Keppra Devastating Side Effects
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

This is my first time posting anything as I am a pretty private person but I was in search of answers and found these posts after putting divorce & Keppra into a google search. I will start by saying that I am living my worst nightmare right now. Married for 34 years to the love of my life, he decided 2 weeks ago (completely out of the blue) to pack a bag & leave and file for divorce without giving me any explanation. I know in my heart and bones this is an effect from this awful med. My… read more

Thank you very much for the post and somewhat validating my feelings. I think my husband is going through a little bit of a existential crisis right now with coming to the realization of living with seizures, being on a medication that causes mood swings and I think he's just looking to live a different life other than what we had planned during our 34 years of marriage. The divorce is moving along, we aren't talking, he has completely abandoned his life and from everything I've read, I do think he's suffering from depression on top of side effects from the medication. Unfortunately he doesn't have enough people in his life that will challenge him and they just accepted this is what wants so now I've accepted that I need to let him go and live his life as he chooses right now. Quite a blow considering all the plans we had made for our life together so now I just try to get through my life day by day.

Hi hun! I’m sorry you are going through this! I recently got a new doctor and I am currently taking 2,250mg of keppra when my doctor put me on it he warned me about the irritation side affect and had warned my fiancé and I that I needed to take antidepressants while on the medication because the higher the dose the more risk I had of getting so irritated or annoyed that I could ruin our relationship or even hit my significant other because of the side affects. My doctor strictly looked at my fiancé at the time and told him that if I say leave me alone to just leave me alone and let myself calm down. I am currently taking 750mg keppra but total for the day is 2250mg of keppra 1 in the morning and 2 at night and I am on 40mg of citalopram. From reading what you have said it could have been multiple things. He could have been on the wrong medication for his epilepsy all together, if he wasn’t taking a antidepressant with keppra that is a big part because I know if I forget to take my antidepressant with my seizure medication I have rude out bursts and I will be rude and annoyed over the smallest things. But the side effects he was getting from the medication should have been taken more seriously because if he’s taking keppra he will end up having a mood swing disorder .

I hope my experience with this medication and my thoughts helped. I don’t think it was anything you have done the keppra it’s self will make someone do that.
