Who And Why Do The Name Of Seizures Change?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My seizures were called Petit-Mal as a child. Later Partial , then Absence Seizures. I was recently told they are Partial Awareness Seizures.

I would like to know who does the naming as well.

I saw something like colored bubbles for a little bit as a child. As I got older, the seizures changed. Over the last 40 years or so, and more recently after that Neurologist retired I have been dealing with excellent people. My Parents could tell when I was overmedicated. That happened because I did not weigh much but was given an "average dose" during Junior and High School.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , This information is from the website link I sent you about from Epilepsy.com: “Focal seizures: Previously called partial seizures, these start in an area or network of cells on one side of the brain.
Generalized seizures: Previously called primary generalized, these engage or involve networks on both sides of the brain at the onset.“. You can read more detail on the epilepsy.com website that I sent you a link to above. Your friend in Texas, Becky

It matters only to treating neurologist, to some extent, although most of neurologists just write medicines without thoroughly considering its chemical formula and reaction, which is very important to consider.
I observed only one neurologist, who is now retired, he used to take lot of time to adjust or introduce new medication, he was doing what any specialist need to do, but now he is retired.
This, I told my family doctor, he simply replied that he has no lust of money he is near to retirement and just see few patients.
But according to my personal opinion he was doing justice with his profession.

If I do not pay attention to what my triggers are, I can and did have large ones. They are raising the dosage of my Briviact to 100 mgs, AM instead of 50 mgs. Maybe that will help.

The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) does the naming and later renaming of epileptic seizures. This link leads to an explanation of this fact from the US National Library of Medicine: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28276060/
