Mediterranean Diet For Memory
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone used the Mediterranean diet for helping their memory?

My neurologist said that besides seizure control, getting enough sleep, and exercise that the Mediterranean diet would be something to look into.

If you have what are you recommendations as food? I have already started some research for it.

I live in a village area and my family grows mostly everything I eat so my diet is somewhat keto because it mainly consists of meat, vegetables, fruits and low sugar products because I do not eat much processed stuff. I don't know if it's thanks to this diet but my epilepsy is progressing very slowly, even without medication I haven't had a seizure in 7 years, I don't know if my epilepsy is genetic or a cyst in my brain is causing it but I still got a bit of control over it as meds seem to do me more harm than good. Also you could try some calming teas for the nervous system because they really helped me. Hope this helps.

I am looking into it myself as well. I have a friend who is a surgeon. He keeps convincing me to try the ketogenic diet. He says the diet has a very strong potential and we don't even know yet how powerful it can be -- e.g. that it's probably not just antiepileptic (suppressing the symptoms like AED do), but also antiepileptogenic and disease-modifying. I've googled a lot and found some articles that say something similar. He's been on the diet for 2 years already because of the diabetes.
Seems like in the UK you can only be referred to a specialist in this area if you have a severe form of refractory epilepsy, but my neurologist says he doesn't mind me trying it on my own and see how I feel 🤷‍♀️ Considering that it can have this potential it almost feels silly not to try it.
I don't think I could do the proper ketogenic diet for epilepsy (as it's too restrictive and can lead to nutritional deficiencies and other negative effects if not done carefully, and just too difficult to follow), but something like modified Atkins diet could probably be a good option. It seems like mediterranean diet in also similar in some way, so I am now doing my research on that one as well 😂

Sorry to hear about your experience. I didn't realize seizures could have that bad of an effect - unless resulted in a fall. Was it the type of seizure that lasted longer than 5 minutes? I keep reading that a seizure is an emergency if it lasts over 5 minutes.

After my initial seizure (which were very bad) I was in the hospital for a month. I then had to learn how to eat, walk, etc and eventually everything came back. When I went to the Mayo Clinic in Florida they said they were surprised I walked into the room and was not in a wheelchair based on my records. I have had different types of seizures every 3-4 months it seems like since then.

They also said the medication I am on can be a factor. I am on 3 different medications.

Are your memory issues related to your seizures? Or maybe a side effect of your medications for seizures? My dad is having memory issues along with newly developed Epilepsy so I'm curious about that connection.
