Do Epilepsy Medications Cause Fatigue?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’m always tired and I want to know if it’s because of my epilepsy medicines.

BethCook, yes, both epilepsy and anti-seizure medications can have a tendency to make a person tired, some more than others. I hope that helps and that you stay safe and seizure free this evening…

Actually, Beth, the proper answer is "probably". Did your feeling of being tired begin immediately following a new medication being started on you? Have you been diagnosed when any of the mental conditions, disorders and/or illnesses associated with Epilepsy?

Did you tell your neurologist immediately after it began to occur?

NOTE: I ask this because depression (very common among us with Epilepsy and one I have been battling all my life because it started with my Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures days after I was born. And even with the aid of a great antidepressant, it is still possible to have long and powerful depressive states --with one one the common traits being "always tired",

Do you see a therapist or psychiatrist in addition to seeing a neurologist or epileptologist?

If so, then share the information with both of them and hopefully, they will talk about it together before one provides you an answer.

NOTE: There are many common side effects of medications (and even more less common and rare ones), so do not ignore this. However, also explain what your current psychological state is too. I am 56+ years old and (consulted my mom and others on this), the depression sleep that I have experienced with my most powerful depression, is the first time in my life that I have had the depression sleep part of my depression. So, just because all of the traits (common side effects) are listed, does not mean that you will get them. And, as was explained to me last month by my neurologist, just because you did not have a side effect of a medication before, does not mean that you will ever have it.

This is why you find a good neurologist who you can trust and share the information with this neurologist (who have all of that medical knowledge). And also share it with your psychiatrist or psychologist if you have one of them too.
