Has Anyone Had Any Type Of Surgery To Help With The Seizures?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Had your surgery been successful? I have a neuro appt. next week for MRI and update on new meds added to my other med and I was wondering if I should talk to him about this.

I had a brain tumor 11yrs ago on the right frontal lobe ( a glioma tumor) I had seizures at the time but they were a different king. After he removed the tumor I was fine. I only continued to get scar tissue. My new dr. thinks it is the scar tissue. I know my triggers and have change my eating, no drinking, lowered stress and it is PTSD anxiety I believe that bringing about these new seizures 3yrs . This is the best and a new neurologist for me so I am hopeful. Next week MRI which has been 3yrs ago.
Thank you Becky.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I’ve never had the surgery but our team members @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member can tell you his experience with both the VNS & now he has the RNS instead & @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member can tell you about her experience with the VNS I think it was & I believe she said it hurt & she had brain surgery I think it was & hasn’t had anymore seizures I don’t think. Team member @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I think had brain surgery years ago also & it has helped stop his seizures. Those are some team members you can reach out to if you want. Good luck. I have had surgery twice. As mentioned by @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member, they will most likely make you go through some kind of sleep study. I had to do it twice for both operations. The eeg sleep study will confirm your epilepsy, and also see where the in your brain the seizure are occurring.

Now in terms of the pro and cons of the eeg, I think the pro is that you can get some answer related to your epilepsy. The con is getting the answer you didn't want. For example, finding out that your epilepsy occurs in an area of your brain that is in operable. However, in my opinion it's better to know than not to know.

In terms of the actual operation, there are a bunch of pros and cons. I think in terms of the pro, it could be that it makes you seizure free and maybe one day no longer have to take medication.

The con, its surgery! You never know what could happen in the operation room, or what could happen after the operation. Fortunately, nothing out of the ordinary occurred for me.

Lastly, what could happen that isn't necessarily a pro or con is that your operation doesn't make you seizure free but lessens the severity. That was my situation. I knew that was what the objective of the operation was goin in.

I have been doing my research as I do all medical conditions I have been through. I just have not seen people talk about it if they had and what were the pros and cons if they did. I will continue my quest! Thank you for your feedback.
