With my 3-5 day EEG coming up, what should I expect? The biggest complaint is boredom is what I've been told. Will any activities be done to me to see if it triggers my seizures?
I've done the week to week 2 eeg's look to be confined to your bed with all the wires and everything connected to your head and body and being sleep deprived to bring on a sezuire and being taken off your meds one by one then all together to bring on a sezuire and maybe staying up all night with or without any medication and visa versa. The first day could just be getting sat up and getting instructions and a introduction about what's going to happen I brought a few magazines I liked to read and a new book I wanted to read and I was lucky enough to have my phone and iPad with me I also little time for myself just to sleep and relax and watch some t.v. and I was able to sneak in some food and snacks I liked to eat so I didn't have to rely on the hospital food I also had my friends and a family member who could run down to food court to get me something to eat. Bring what you like to do in your spare time
I took a gaming console with me when I had my 5 day EEG done at the EMU in Birmingham, AL. Flashing lights are my triggers. So for the first 72 hours they kept me awake, I played games and watched videos in low light conditions.
Also expect them to keep you awake so they can trigger a seizure. I don’t know why they do that with me since I usual seize while I am asleep.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member This all depends all how they want to go about it. I thought I may have gone off meds at some point during mine but no they just left everything as it was. From what I heard after the reason they did it that way was because they wanted to see how the EEG waves would go when I was on meds. My understanding is this was about picking up absent seizure activity as well as any seizures that may happen overnight.
You will be taken off your meds, sometimes gradually, sometimes all at once. One of the nights they might keep you sleep-deprived, or other things you might experience sometimes or on a regular basis. It’s all about finding the situations that make you prone to having seizures (ie. Triggers). But do NOT worry, they won’t be prodding you or causing pain to bring them on!
