How Does Epilepsy Effect Pregnancy?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question đź’

I'm not preggers nor want to be until i am married but i do have concerns. Let's say i wanted to have a baby, how would it affect me and my child? I take Trileptal 2 times a day (4 pills total). Would i have to just adopt, or could my chikd have birth complications? Or birth defects or would i be putting my life at risk or will we both be ok? Talk to your doctors (neuro and obgyn)! Some meds cause no problems and some can cause serious ones. I used to work in healthcare, both in a doctor's office and then as a pharmacy tech, and I'm not sure! Even if I knew more of the science on it then (worked in med for 8 years), I would want to know the most current info from professionals. Ask for the brutal honesty of what can or can't happen, and even request to change meds if that is what is needed.

I was affected during my pregnancy. Alot more seizures. My daughter was born with developmental disabilities. It was all worth it. I can't imagine my life without her. Talk to your doctor when you are ready.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , Whenever you wish to become or once you do become pregnant, let your doctor know so they can help put you on seizure medication that will be safe for the baby & you because there are medications that can possibly cause birth defects. For example, I’m 44 & about 15 years or a little more ago, at the time I was still seeing my Pediatric Neurologist & he started me on Depakote & he said to let him know if I wanted to ever get pregnant because that pill can cause birth defects & he’d switch me to something else. I’m not married & doubt I want kids. But you should be able to still have children, you should just be in touch with your doctor about that whenever that time comes. You can go to the search box at the top of the page & type in “Pregnancy” & an article might come up about taking meds during pregnancy & causing ADHD in some kids. I thought I saw a more specific article on here one time but once you type in “Pregnancy” & click the search button a link to the Pregnancy article should appear. You might also find information at www.epilepsy.com . I hope this gives you a little more relaxed feeling that you can have children, but to be safe let your Neurologist know when that journey starts & let your pregnancy doctor know also about your seizures & your medicine, etc. Hope this helps a little. Your friend in Austin, Becky
