Pursuit For University
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi everyone, I want to study Optometry at university but I am worried they will reject my application because I suffer from epilepsy or I won't be allowed to practice once qualified because of the disability. Has anyone been in a similar situation or can give me some reassurance? Thanks!

I know little about optometry, other than it has to do with our vision . If you need a steady hand ,it could be dangerous to the patient if you seizured

I'm glad things worked out with your boss. In my couple decades with epilepsy, I was honest up front in becoming part of a football team coaches group. Within 30 minutes of telling the head coach, I was contacted by the administration department of the County that sponsors the program as my not being qualified, when no such discussions were ever held with that department. I will never reveal my condition relative to a business relationship unless I am hired and accepted in that working environment, first. I know this sounds selfish, but epilepsy places others to be selfish towards us first.

I am an MD! Uncontrolled seizures through medical school & residency. I did not tell my future boss about my seizures until I was hired. There was no issue at that point. I did tell my schools upon admission & everyone was gracious & supportive. Don’t ever let seizures stop you from achieving your goals. You can do it!!
