VNS Or RNS Complications
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone that has received an VNS had increased seizure activity? My downloaded scan shows activity up to 60 seizures per day and I thought the VNS was suppose to help but it’s not so far.

VNS does not lessen your seizures, it suppose to have less impact. It sends a shock/spark to the side of the brain that is affected. This is what I read and how it was explained to me three weeks ago. I will be having a consultation in a month or so.

I had the VNS surgery done last year in 2021, and so far it’s not really helping that much.

I had a VNS for several years and saw no improvements in my seizures. I had another surgery getting it removed.

Hello. I have haf my VNS implant for approx. 20 years. It never controlled my seizures. In 2009, I had to have it replaced, as one of the electrical wires was detached. My Neuro said he had 3 other patients that had faulty ones. There was an article in Reader's Digest, about a man who had a heart attack, as a result of one of his electrical wires becoming detached. Cyberonics, who manufacture it, sent a spokesperson, and she attended the surgery. It had to be replaced. They covered it all except $2,500. I had to pay the hospital in payments, and it took me years to pay it off. My Neuro said since it was faulty, Cyberonics should cover it. I contacted the woman who attended my surgery, and told her what my Neuro said. She said with evil in her voice "your VNS was not faulty, it just had to be adjusted. Your Neuro needs to watch the words he uses". I yelled "Adjusted? it had to be replaced with a new one". The battery in it died many years ago. Now I'm stuck with this "thing" in my chest. I tried to find a lawyer to sue them. I found out Cyberonics cannot be sued, because of a Government loop hole. I truly believe the Neurologists that recommended it, we're given kick backs. I'm sorry to scare you, but this is my experience. I wish you better luck.
