How Do You Deal With The Internalized Ableism Of Getting A Medical Alert Bracelet?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

How do you emotionally deal with having to wear a medical alert bracelet? Do you have a preference for the USB medical alert bracelets? Or the traditional physical one?

That a tough question.
I believe we all have it in sum ways.
Depression does not help
That I know
Do you like certain hobbies that yourself accomplish?
Or can you donate time to a place who could use you?
There is also peaceful music that helps.
I myself get up in the early hours of the morning have a coffee and a quite smoke with my pipe and watch the sun rise.
Gives me some peace thru out the day.

I have the neck pendant with "Epilepsy" on one side and my wife's contact info on the other. My cell phone lock screen has a scrolling message with "Epilepsy", my wife's cell#, and a notification that there is a med card in my wallet, which is a printable template provided on the hospital's web portal. I figured to go analog instead of digital in case water is involved, or some other damage that may make the USB unreadable, like a fall.

The other thing I do for peace of mind is to educate whoever I'm with what my seizures look like, and what to do if I were to have one. It's never good to be completely on your own, with people sticking things in your mouth so you don't "swallow your tongue"... lots of misconceptions out there.

Emotionally... I gotta do what I gotta do. I don't want more problems because of the world's ignorance to my condition. I have, however, attached emotion to the diagnosis itself in the form of depression. Then again, who doesn't? It's being addressed, I'm seeing a psychologist. The pendant is inconspicuous and stays tucked in my shirt. I've never been asked about it. I do know however that emergency medical personnel will check for a medic-alert tag and will check my cell phone and wallet if I'm down unresponsive. I'm not embarrassed, this condition is not my fault. It would be the same as if I were diabetic or had some other chronic condition. I fixed it so that if I can't speak for myself, I'm covered. I actually feel good that I'm covered.

Nada, Some of the bracelets from MedicAlert are very stylish. They have some even made of gold. They also have a digital card, so anyone who has a camera in their cellphone can find all the information.
