Hello
My 9 year old missed his levetiracetam this morning. We did not realize it until noon. He takes his medicine twice a day. Every 12 hours. We try to take it every time at the same time. His doses are 8:30 am and 8:30 pm. We have this set due to school and bed time. My question is: Is it safe to skip one dose. My son only had 2 full convulsion seizures. He also has night seizures/terrors when sleeping. His doctor wants to start winging him off his medication after we view his next EEG and… read more
My mom - who is a nurse-says it’s ok to accidentally miss a dose, but take the next dose at your next time. Like, I miss my usual dose at 7am, but to “catch up” with my next dose at 7pm. Make sense? I usually set a timer on my phone, or the cats medication time (she has hyperthyroidism).
Thank you everyone for your reply. So far he’s fine. No affects from 1 mission dose. We have timers and alarms on every phone and device to remind us. We were distracted at that time. I hope it never happens again. I feel better knowing there are people out there that understands and helps. 🥰
From what I read it is ok to miss one dose.If I had the medication with me then I would take it then even though it is 2-4 hours later.I then would take my night time medication a let us say 3 hours later than usual. I sometimes don't take my medication at the same time.
I've never had a problem missing my morning dose (it can even be taken a few hours late so, it might be a good idea to talk to the school nurse about keeping a dose on hand), but I am an adult and I don't know for sure if he'll have the same experience of being ok. I do hope so, though. I'm glad his doctor wants to wean him off the levetiracetam because, that junk causes all kinds of emotional problems, aptly named Keppra Rage. It was a problem for me for a long time but, when I brought it up to my family, they said I was just using it as an excuse to be a b*tch (thanks guys, I love you too). In 2020, my new neurologist, who's a much more level headed individual, agreed with me about trying to get off that and onto something else and, while that backfired because my body is addicted, we were at least able to cut it back far enough that the rage isn't an issue anymore. I don't know if you've discussed what other drugs to give him in place of keppra but, I've also be on Oxcarbezapine for manh years now and, the side effects have been minimal, which is greatly appreciated after everything the Keppra has put me through.
