@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I’m 43 & saw my Pediatric Neurologist till my early 30’s & several years ago he told me to let him know if I ever decided to have kids so he could adjust my medicine because Depakote could possibly cause birth defects. I don’t have kids & as of right now have no interest in having any. So before you have any it’s best to talk to your Neurologist & discuss things & what medicine would be best & safest for you & the little one you wish to create & try to avoid any effects from any seizure medications that might effect the baby causing birth defects. So talking to your doctor is the first step to take & let them lead you & give you some safety suggestions & information. Your friend in Texas, Becky

I was first diagnosed as epileptic after a head trauma when I was 13. At 26 I was pregnant with my first born and all my family did was tell me how I could not handle it and that my child would suffer. I am now 30 week pregnant with my second child and first born son goes to play group half day. YES ,… I am epileptic, I am a fighter because I am an even better mother!! With my first born I was twice as cautious than anyone due to self doubt but I proved my family wrong hence having a sweet first born while being pregnant even though I am on 5 anti-epileptic medication.

I have had seizures since & was 3 yrs old. I have two healthy strong boys. They are grown now but neither has Epilepsy. They don't have any other issues either. I had the blessing of being even healthier when I was pregnant than I regularly am. I didn't have any seizures during my pregnancies. I was told by the doctor that even though I took my meds all through pregnancy, he would prefer that I not breastfeed so that baby would not continue to absorb my medication. Both of my pregnancies were very positive experiences.

Hi ,I started having tonic / clinic seizures aged 21 & went on to have 3 children . I wasn't on medication with my first ,I had a major seizure 6 weeks before the birth but everything was fine & they put me on Tegretol ( 1985).I was advised not to breast feed as the meds may transfer into breast milk. They also put me on a higher strength contraceptive pill.Seizures weren't frequent then ,I fell pregnant twice more whilst on medication,no issues.I was seizure free when my kids were young
