Lifestyle Changes To Prevent Seizures?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello everyone
My seizures have come back monthly after going 7 years seizure free. Right now they are tonic clonic sleep seizures. My neurologist is closely monitoring me. I have noticed they are right around my menstrual period. I have cut out alcohol, i always sleep at least 8 hours a night, I have been going therapy and taking anti-anxiety medications for a couple years. Anyone have any other suggestions? I don't think I have the discipline to do the keto diet but I know that's been helpful.… read more

Besides your hormone changes , triggering your seizures, you may want to check with the meds you’re on And talk to your Dr. Your med levels maybe low or your body is starting to tolerate the medication and it’s just not working no more. You and your Dr. may have to discuss about changing to a new medication.

It is probably hormonal. Same thing happened to me. It began a few years ago. I seized on the first day of my cycle for close to a year. Saw a new neuro. Put on a new med. Seemed to work a bit at first; better over time.

I worked with Johns Hopkins on a Ketogenic Diet to control seizures. The Ketogenic diet was original developed by a neurologist. The 2 nueros I worked with had patients that went years with out seizures and were able to back off of meds. I was not that fortunate but it did improve my seizures while I was on the diet! But I will say, Do not do this on your own do this with your doctor and a nutritionist on your side.

Thank you all so much for the suggestion. I had stopped birth control in 2021, so it’s not crazy to think that may have triggered my seizures. I’m going back on birth control, increased my lamictal dose, I’m getting an EEG and serum lamictal levels in 2 weeks.

I am taking 0.5 mg of Ativan as needed. I take it about once a week or so, maybe less.
