The fourth tonic clonic seizure I had was 6weeks off the birth of my 1st (1985) Remember ,this was different times I wasn't taken to hospital ,the GP checked my son's heartbeat &that wasn't !.I was placed on Tegretol The only thing I was told was it may come through in breast milk I didn't breast feed anyway Baby was fine .I was told they'd increase the dosage of the contraceptive pill as it may interfere with the tegretol. I think it was the other way round ,I had 2further pregnancies on tegretol but only had 1seizure &that was at night.Luckily I was well controlled when they were little Im sure there's a lot more advice &support out there nowadays eg our specialist epilepsy nurses work in hospitals with mums-to-be.Good luck x
I had med increases along the way; more so toward the end of course. I stayed physically active. Rsted when I could. I did seize just after both births. Here if I can help further.
Christine You are a model of modern day epilepsy thinking! Great advice
for pregnancy planning & how to choose meds. Also very important to
realize a seizure has little effect on the fetus. Funny how you know how
meds affected you differently. Everyone is unique so how we react to our
meds is too. My very first pregnancy-1979- child was fine cause I was on
the pill- meds overrode it- but pill overrode the meds harmful to child too.
Not till 1988 was this known..
Years ago I had a few seizures while pregnant cause the good meds
weren't out yet. I had researched this and knew my seizures would
not hurt the child the way stronger meds did. Now seizure meds will
not hurt so don't worry, relax and enjoy your time.
Thanks, yeah it all helps. Just like to know what may potentially happen.
i am currently not on any meds, and with my first child i came off them before i knew i was pregnant, and then just at the very end was put back on a low dose. Afterwards came off after a couple off months and have stayed that way. This pregnancy its become more difficult a lot earlier on, i am very near the end of 2nd trimester.
