I have not had a single job since I graduated highschool 5 years ago and started having seizures. I am scared of what might happen if I do and being rejected because of my disability or getting hurt on the job. My family sees me as lazy and that I'm just living off the government though. I've decided I'm not going further with tests and not going to take anymore pills so am excepting that this seizure cycle is how I'm going to be living for now on. I have handed out a few resumes in some safe… read more
I've worked full-time since I graduated high school. I'm now 44. I don't drive, I live alone, work as a legal records clerk, I support myself, live comfortably, and refuse to see my epilepsy as a disability.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member When I was able to find work (when I was younger and lived in the city), I worked for 25+ years. Sorry to hear about how your family is reacting! Have you reached out to the Epilepsy Canada for assistance in the job search? They (and their equivalent foundations in other nations) are your best hope to finding the best job opportunities to apply for (an employer who is willing to not simply reject you because of your seizures).
I work and am working on my bachelors degree. I take my meds and work closely with my doctor. Both my employer and school are very understanding and supportive.
They have know right to ask, if you offer it up that’s on you. Once you are employed, you have the right under the ADA to request accommodations. So long as it doesn’t change the course of the business and/ or it’s financially a hardship for the business. Your question can and will be answered by the Department of Justice. That’s a good place to start. You want to work for a few years if you can to bolster the amount of any SSI you may want to try to receive. If you have worked, they have a calculation of your high 3. So I assume since you haven’t you maybe are receiving 8 or 9 I don’t know. Once you do work for awhile that number will change dramatically. Look into some Aflac too. There’s only a certain bit they’ll cover so read the fine print. Buy insurance against your house, car payment. Work for a few years up your income amount. Then get out and file claims against the other loans. Read the fine print. They may not cover pre existing conditions. Good luck. If you can’t work, you can’t work. Don’t forget about affirmative action. The DOJ is where to start. They’ll tell you your rights.
i work at a after school day care center. having said that. i had to claw my way through to get to this part... (this is what i had to do... results may vary). 1) get a a job couch. a one who finds a job for disabled people. 2a) apply within your means. meaning do you have a bus or some sort of transportation you rely on... if not limit yourself to a 5-10 minute or less drive. 2b) get a stay at home job or a once every (time allotted) do a video call or somehow go into work for a meeting. 3) be your own boss. meaning start on youtube or your home that doubled as a place that your customers/clients will go here. and 4) do not be afraid to volunteer. i had to volunteer at this day care center before hiring me (mostly because of the ssi).
