Order Taking Medication
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Sorry if I have asked this question before. I take a lot of medication to control my epilepsy, especially in the morning. For those on lots of tablets do you take them in a specific order and if you don't do your auras or seizures get worse? Thanks.

My medication is taken morning, with dinner and then when going to bed... Lamictal a.m., Lamictal with evening meal and Phenytoin before bedtime. No difference in seizures as long as I take them at the right time. A few hours in-between doesn't affect me.

I take all my meds at night and all at one time. Keppra XR, Zonegran, (a few of each of those two meds each), synthroid, zoloft, and prilosec. I honestly have them in a daily pill sorter and just take them in one or two big swallows.

On those rare occasions when I mistakenly took a double dosage of breakfast or bedtime pills, the result was always at least one full seizure.

As I stated above, I looked at the weekly container and my brain lied to me by showing me that I had not yet taken that day's pills for that time (breakfast or bedtime), thus I took them. It was not until later that my brain showed me the truth (that I had already taken that day's pills and now had just taken tomorrow's).
If you are lucky enough that your brain never shows your false images just because of Epilepsy and possible side effects of medications (rather than because of in the midst of a seizure of complex partial seizures), then I am extremely happy for you and hope that you NEVER have to experience this. I have not been that lucky.

Thus, we started a daily checklist for the 4 times per day that I take my pills and the 3 times per day that my mom takes her pills and 2 times per day that she takes her insulin shot. This way my father and sister (whose house we live in) can help each of us remember to take our pills and attempt to avoid taking double doses (regardless of what my brain is showing me). And since we started doing this months ago, I have not taken a double dosage or forgotten to take my pills at any of the four times per day.

I think it depends how many times a day you take your pills a day it could be morning lunch early evening and nighttime that’s four times a day or it could be three times a day or just morning and nighttime which is easier because that’s only twice a day it depends on what medications you’re on x x
