Live Donation What Epileptics Can Do. What They Are Limited To
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was planning on becoming a live organ donor. That is until I was told that those who have epilepsy can't. My question is-if you have partial epilepsy, is that still the case?

What a nurse told me about giving blood ought to apply to being a live organ donor irregardless as to the type of Epilepsy one has. So the explanation given by abovementioned nurse in Canada is based on blood loss. If an epileptic loses blood by live organ donations or giving blood then the person loses consumed anticonvulsant medication. The loss of the medication can bring on seizures. So that , for me, was a good enough reason not to give blood or become a live organ donor irregardless as to my type of Epilepsy seizures

I can't give blood in the UK I need to have been seizure free/ off meds for at least a year ( not going to happen )If it was possible to donate organs I would - this is mandatory in Wales, you can opt out if you want to. Interesting ?

That is a nice thing for Red Cross to say. But as far as being a donor, even if you haven't had seizures for a year or better the fact that you have had seizures in the past, gives them cause to pause because there is still a potential that seizures may return. That was the response i received from a nurse i met while having an EEG done.

I just talked from someone from redcross-they said at least for them, if you're seizure free for 30 days then there should not be a problem
