The reason names are changing is because epilepsy research is only roughly 50 years old. You couldn't do what you needed w a brain on a cadaver back then, and we didn't have MRIs or EEGs for those purposes

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member it is frustrating. i get it as, the first one that determines the diagnosis is the winner and that will be the name. i call it seizures because the 1st dr always called it seizures. 2nd dr found out that it was complex partials. the 5th or 6th dr what trigger it was. and so on.
and ChristineHales idiopathic seizures means, spontaneously seizures. i know this because i had that for about 5 years (until the 5th or 6th dr).

I know. I was at a mini conference given by the head of the epilepsy department of the Montreal Neurological Institute. She showed us film of individuals having diverse types of seizures and asked us what type of seizure each one was. I answered the specific example of one of them, by stating that I was more comfortable with the names I originally knew and defined the example of the type as a psychomotor seizure. The lady giving the conference was amazed by my response. She responded by saying that she has trained many nurses in caring for Epileptics. And many of them did not know of the term psychomotor. That boosted my ego, especially when others attending, all of us being Epileptics, wanted in on this new discovery. But the name changes can, indeed, be frustrating. 😃

it's the drs fault. i was diagnose as complex partial into grand mals seizures in the 90s. around 2000 they change the type of a seizure as well as added stuff and rearranging the order. now i have focal onset (partial) impaired awareness (complex) into tonic clonic (grand mal) seizures. different drs say different types. some say partials and others say focal onset.

Thank you you just have to get on with it I have my good days and my bad days and sometimes I just have to laugh that I have epilepsy x x
