Does Anyone Elses VNS Hurt When You Run The Magnet Across It?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I got a VNS in 2017 and whenever i run the magnet across it it chokes me and hurts my chin and the left side of my head. I've told my Dr about it and he just turned it down. I've avoided using it because it scares me when it chokes me! It still goes off every 5 minutes and that doesn't hurt since my Dr lowered it's power but it still hurts with the magnet.

When I had my VNS (had it taken it due to it no longer working and needing several MRIs), it was uncomfortable to swipe the magnet. I wouldn't say it was painful exactly, but it was rather uncomfortable when it was at the highest setting. I could feel it all the way into my teeth! It was worth it the time that I had it, I just wish it would have continued working longer than it did. The battery didn't die or anything it just seemed to stop controlling the seizures as well after the first year I had it. Still glad I gave it a try. Also that being said, I've been through much more painful things (migraines, cluster headaches, kidney stones), so my idea of pain is a bit different compared to what I felt from the 30 second "shock" of the VNS. The discomfort wasn't horrific by any means, at most I might have cringed when I swiped it.
