Menopause And Seizures
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’d like to hear how menopause affected you, your seizures, and if they finally settled down after menopause. I’m getting horrible mood swings, hot flashes, and my seizures are more severe right now. Thanks.

Hi Terribee! I had terrible problems during perimenopause. My seizures, mostly tonic/clonic but others as well, have always been linked to my hormones. I was also a classroom teacher and had to leave the classroom. I had very frequent and severe seizures. This lasted about 5 years for me. Now however, I'm in postmenopause and LOVING IT! Haven't had a seizure in 6 years. Still not returning to the classroom, but that's a choice.

I know my aunt had them & menopause caused them & same with puberty. I know hormones are bad cause every month at that time the week before & after are more strong the when on your period. But I find the week before is the worst & all birth control made it worse. I hope my meds. keep mine calm when I go through it but hope menopause doesn't last long for me. I hear people who have it for a lot of years & aren't epileptic.

Mine began when I was in my 40's. I was never on the "pill" but the Neurologist and Gynecologist decided to do so. Made Me get an extremely heavy period and stopped timely manner. They finally took Me off the "pill"!!!

I’m 44 and I was wondering the same thing. I had two seizures when I was young, my third at 40 and now my fourth last night at age 44. I’m wondering if hormones are triggering it.

I've been through the menopause but my seizures have become more frequent I'm 62 now & don't have tonic/ clinics but my non convulsive absences/ partial seizures affect my life greatly .I often wonder whether HRT might have helped - guess I'll never know
