Alcohol And Epilepsy?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am 22 years old, I just graduated from college. I am young and I like to go out with my friends and family and drink with them. I know that a lot, probably the majority, of the people on this will respond telling me not to drink any alcohol because it is dangerous. However, at my age and my social life, it just doesn't seem reasonable that I can not get drunk and have fun with my friends and have fun in my 20's like everyone else can
Anyway, the day after drinking though is when I have the… read more

While I understand your point I disagree
I stopped drinking at 18. Have not had a drink since then I am 43 now
And I have still had just As much fun as everyone else
I have been a Dj
Played soccer lived and travelled abroad been all over the US.
Alcohol is not a prerequisite for fun. So ask yourself what’s more important drinking something that’s bad for yur health anyway. Or living a quality seizure free life by eliminating something that could trigger seizures

I drink regularly still as a 39 year old (diagnosed when 26). If I'm honest I realise it would be worth trying to go an extended period(s) of time with no alcohol or other substances but my discipline is terrible.

I drank in my 20s too but made sure I only had a couple, otherwise I was guaranteed to have a seizure. With our meds, 1 drink can actually affect us like we’ve had two(at least in my sit.). Make sure you take your meds. After you’ve gone out with friends a few times drinking, you realize just how overrated it really is.

I can drink only half a drink without throwing up. It was really hard for me when I was younger and everyone else was drinking and I couldn’t. I’m 43 now. I know what you’re going through and I hope someone can give you the answers you seek. Hugs for a good day.

I’m 24 and know what you mean. I was diagnosed with epilepsy at 20 and had a hard time seeing all my friends go out and have a good time, especially when everyone turned 21. When I did/do drink alcohol and stay up late I made sure that I had nothing else going on the next day. I would try and take it easy and sleep. I know some people will disagree with this, but I think it depends on the person. I would only limit myself to 2-3 drinks when I would go out. Also make sure you take your meds on time. That was a big one for me! Sometimes I would forget to take them before going out for the night and wouldn’t get home until 1am. Then my schedule would be all messed up and I think that would increase my seizure activity the next couple days. I’m not sure how well your seizures are controlled, and like I said it depends on the person. Everyone reacts differently to alcohol and the amount that is had. I definitely wouldn’t go overboard. And there are plenty of ways to still have fun without drinking like the previous people have said. Hope this helps!
