A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

What types of things did they do to try and trigger your siezures for people who have had this test? And did some people fail to have a seizure while in the unit?

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member a wada test is they numb your upper leg/groin and put a special needle with a cord. they go to your brain and freeze one haft if your brain. then they ask you simple questions and do it again on the other side.
they numb you so you cant feel it. the freezing thing last a few minutes. and the test last about an out or so.

My first one was in 2002. I was in hospital for three days. They took me off my meds, sleep deprived me and flashed lights. I had two really big tonic-clonic seizures that confirmed the focal point and they proceeded with the other tests to qualify me for surgery.

My second one was in 2015. I was wired up and they sent me home for three days. There was no change in my meds. Some spiking but no seizures.

My third one was in 2017. I was in hospital for 6 or 7 days. They took me off meds, sleep deprivation, stressed me out. Again, spiking but no seizures.

My fourth one was in March 2018. They did an Invasive EEG focusing on the area around my left temporal lobe (the section removed in my surgery in 2002). They took me off my meds and deprived sleep. It took about 6 days but finally had a tonic-clonic.

The seizures were starting from the same area as before. Even though they were able to remove the majority in the first surgery, they were not able to remove all of it. They implanted a NeuroPace the following week.

On my medication consistently, I experience spiking (seizures that begin but fizzle out). When I miss a couple doses, lack of sleep, heavily stressed, I experience seizures that last 30-40 seconds long. They occur mostly while sleeping but can happen when tired or just after waking up. Off all the seizures my doc has told me about, I am clearly aware of one that happened. The rest, they just call to tell me I had one. When they started doing that, it began to explain the days when I felt like I was hit by a truck.

Anyhow, I hope this is helpful.

I’ve done my 2 “3”day at home EEGs at home & they had me continue taking my medicine. The first 3 day EEG I did was a couple years ago with my last Neurologist who had me do the video. My seizures aren’t real sever & so I didn’t have a seizure during that “3” day at home video EEG but of course a few days later my Mom witnessed me having one & used her phone & recorded it & showed my Neurologist. The regular EEG at their office came back normal but the at home EEG showed seizure activity even though I didn’t have an actual seizure during the EEG. A few weeks ago my new Neurologist had me do a “3” at home EEG with just the electronic monitoring & that office didn’t do the video. I’ve been dealing with panic attacks, shaking, twitching, moaning & hollering & having to walk slow at times & when stuff like that happened I had to push a button located on a box that the wires on my head was connected to. The doctor said they only have part of the results back & that shows it’s abnormal all the way across, not just a little here & there. But they are still working on finishing the rest of the results. I doubt I had an actual seizure during this EEG either but I did of course do my shaking, twitching, hollering & moaning & such things that I’ve been dealing with for a few months. The doctor had me continue taking my medicine as usual. A couple months ago this doctor did a regular EEG & she said that showed seizure activity for which they expected. It was nice not having to mess with the video this last time & making sure I kept the video on me & I didn’t have to worry about having my lamp on at night for the video. Your friend in Texas, Becky

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member no. its different testing. a wada test is only for partials seizures and/or tumors. a emu is is recording video to a patient (like the iu (intensive care unit) in hospitals). an eeg is those sticky stuff on your head. i am (un)lucky to have the 2-3 test in a matter of weeks.

Playing game boy always gives me episodes so i brought mine with me and played to my heart’s content. It worked really well and they also sleep deprived me. The process is what finally gave me a diagnosis.
