What Do You Do When You Have A Cold?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hey guys. So we all know we can't take anti-histamines because it can trigger seizures. I am now on day 4 of quite possibly the worst cold of my life and it's driving me nuts. My face won't stop leaking!!! How does the body produce so much goo so quickly?! Best my doc says I can take is Pseudoephedrine and an anti-inflammatory - which only (very slightly) helps, but wears off so quickly. I'm so miserable, I've hardly slept, my nose is raw and my head is in agony from the constant blowing… read more

I drink hot tea and honey, drink orange juice, eat lots of chicken noodle soup especially homemade, use lots of mints especially peppermint, and I use Vicks vapor rub on my feet, chest, neck and a little under my nose if it clogged. All these are things taught to me from when I was young and they always work and help to make me feel better faster.

I do normal saline spray in my nose when i am sick and use those boogie wipes that the little kids use, it helps keeping your nose from getting so raw. I take raw honey and raw garlic with apple cider vinegar with the mother ( slightly warmed really gross tasting) in a little shot. I had lymes disease in the past too and i can't afford to get sick so i try to ward it off quickly. This usually boosts my immunity. I also take lysine tablets from the health food store or whole foods just for the duration of the cold

I have been prescribed antihistimines despite my epilepsy. They may lower the threshhold a bit, but maybe not enough to prevent you from getting some relief for your cold. Talk to your docs.

i am a health nut and when i got a cold i take the fallowing... airborn and emergen-c (and a lot of it), a hand full of vitamin c (morning and night), a teaspoon of pure honey (or something like only honey), nasal spray only at night (every other night), tummy time tea or green tea, soup and maybe toast, and a lot of rest (if you can).

I take a couple squirts of Flonase every 24 hrs in the nose to dry it up. Says its for allergies, but it works.
Vicks vapor rub it or menthol rub substitute for the neck and chest area all day and night.
I have a albuterol inhaler my General practitioner fills on prescription that I only use to prevent a cold from going into my lungs. When my chest rattles, I start to use it.
Only those 3 things.
Very cautious. My streak is usually ruined by being sick. Seizure activity increases. I've found I can't take any off the shelf items that say D, or DM. And no Psuedo, no giaphesine.
Best wishes.
J
