Seizures And Periods
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My tonic clonic seizures are usually around the time of my period due to the hormone changes. I would just like to ask whether ladies have had the same problem or does the progesterone injection help to control the seizures?

Just remember that estrogen is an antagonist and progesterone is protective. If at all possible, have your neurologist AND OB/GYN talk to each other. Not all GYN are knowledgeable about the catemenial (spelling?) issues with epilepsy.

I am just now realizing that my seizures are linking up with my periods. I plan to go see my obgyn this week to talk about medication to help with my hormones that could hopefully lessen the seizures.

I definitively have catameniel (spelling?) epilepsy. It’s actually about 30% of us who experience this challenge. I don’t get a shot, but I do have an IUD that has bio-similar progesterone in it.

I have to say the progesterone injection would probably be a good idea. I remember during both my pregnancys my progesterone was higher and since it calms the nerves it helped.
Especially since estrogen causes electrical discharge to happen during menstruation and ovulation, progesterone might work to the benefit. I use bio meds to help with calming the nerves. But would consider the injection if my condition was more severe.

I have the IUD (which has progesterone in it) and I guess I wouldn't quite know if it's helped. There hasn't been a reduction, but also there has not been an increase. I imagine the only way i could really find out is if I had it removed and not replaced with a new one.
