Does Anyone Else Have Trouble Explaining To Your Kids What's Happening To You?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My boys are getting to the age where they start to notice things more (5 and 7). They've started to ask me about my seizures and it's difficult to explain to a child why this is happening to me. My youngest gets scared sometimes and says he doesn't want to get sick like me. Any suggestions on how I can make this easier for them?

I told them the truth that movie brain causes her to not feel good at times . It’s like this lite switch when you turn it on the light goes on and when you turn it off it goes off. Mommies brain is like that but broken in side , it has a broken wire like inside that makes me do then tell what happens to you in your seizures and you need to rest to recharge yourself to be able to play

i work at the day care center and the kids (mostly 6-9). and they ask me all the time. just talk normal to um (like i would do with this group). just i say the truth. different people have different types, i have (your epilepsy type). and tell um what that means. like seizures are not infectious (like the flu or the cold). and tell um what to do if you have a seizure.
just sit um down and get a q&a sort of thing. i was a kid when i had seizures and mom and dad sat me down and answers my questions as best that they could. no talking down or nothing. and if they dont know when giving an answer then explain to them the definition.
take me, for example. i have partial seizures and grand mals (focal onset impaired awareness and tonic clonics). that means i have 'spaceout' and sometimes i fall on the ground. i had surgery to get rid of the fall on the floor part. when i am having a seizure, just set me down somewhere and say 'deep breath' or 'breath'. do not call 911 because i will be fine in a couple of seconds.

I contracted meningitis at two months. My brother is four years older. He worried about getting sick like me. He was also scared when I had many rides/stays in the hospital as a baby.

I have two boys. They have gotten scared sometimes. They have always known that “if I go to sleep and they can’t wake me” they need to call 911. I started telling them as early as I could. They have seen me hospitalized for them also. You just explain to them the best that you can.
