Computer Time
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am constantly being told by my wife and family to spend less time on my computer because it increases my seizure rate. Yes it's addictive so I am trying to cut down. Is anybody's family telling them similar things? (it's difficult for me because I used to be a computer programmer)

I have been told that spending long periods of time using a computer and playing video games is a trigger. So in the future use Your computer for certain lengths of time then take a break.

I've never been told to stay away from them by my family. But when they tried to do induce seizures with flashing light during any EEG I have had done, it didn't induce one. So we know I am not photosensitive. It is still responsible to take breaks while using electronic devices, at least for the sake eyestrain/headaches and such. Might not have much to do with epilepsy, but if any of the devices you use have a blue light filter, it is worth turning it on. I use my phone at night before I go to bed all the time. Turning the filter on made it easier on the eyes and seemed to reduce headaches.

Darryl, since you worked with computers, I can understand why you love your computer time. I don't spend anymore than an hour on the computer, since I left my job in 97. I check my email and Facebook daily. About once a week, I balance my checking account. I'm not too much into technology. I don't have a smart phone because I only use my prepaid cell phone for emergencies. It usually stays off in my purse, for days on end. I feel that technology is ruining our youth, and even some old folks. Having said all that, I never experienced seizures while spending 8 hours on my work computer.

Not all seizures are triggerd by flashing lights. EEG testing does the strobe light to attempt to trigger seizure. My son has had dozens of EEGs and has never had an issue with flashing lights triggering his seizures. He does have a rare trigger for his nocturnal seizures and that's being startled.
