Is Nitrous Oxide Safe For Children With Epilepsy?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 14 yr old ID son needs to have a baby tooth pulled, and the dentist wants to use nitrous oxide to relax him. The nurse at the neurologist’s office said it is safe. But, he just had his first seizure in four years last month. So, I’m a little nervous. Has anyone with a child with seizures used this for a procedure? If yes, was it in the dental office or at a hospital? Did things go smoothly, or is there anything I should be aware of ahead of time?

I was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of seven, and have had several dental procedures done requiring the use of nitrous oxide. I always let the dentist know ahead of time That I have epilepsy, and I have never had any problems.

I don't have a child with seizures. But I have had seizures since I was 17 or 18 and have had nitrous oxide at the dentist several times and it has never been an issue. In fact, if I didn't have it I would probably be more likely to have a seizure due to the stress. I've had it any time I needed a cavity filled since childhood and never had any problems. I've never heard of it being an issue with epilepsy. They provide oxygen along with the nitrous, so the oxygen levels still stay up and in normal limits with inhalation.

From the research I did , it is considered safe. It will make your son drowsy and relaxed, feel floaty ,warm and tingly. They may even forget about the procedure.

WHOA!! I have not been on here in so long and I am so happy I checked it out today. My 19-year-old daughter, who has been seizure free almost three years now, and is doing great, needs her wisdom teeth pulled soon and I am kind of nervous... Think she'll be OK?? They do put her under, right?

We had this exact question yesterday. I talked with our dentist and he assured me it was safe because it's in and out of the body by inhaling and exhaling within 30 seconds. That said, my 11.5 year old son was nervous about breathing it (not related to it possibly causing seizures I don't think), so he chose not to have it when his three baby teeth were pulled yesterday. They just numbed him.
