Has anyone had difficulty with their employer, due to Epilepsy. The employers don't seem to be understanding, empathetic, or even professional. Last week I was given a new supervisor and new job duties. The other job duties were very stressful and out in bright lighting, which made my seizures worse. I had a Frontal Temporal Lobectomy in 1988, and I have some memory issues. The supervisor had listened to a phone call, and said I repeated myself a few times. I told her that I didn't notice… read more
Never had problem with employer they always understood my epilepsy. I didn't care if employees understood or not they weren't my friends.
They don't even understand the migraines
I've had Epilepsy for 40 years. The work culture isn't empathetic to people w/Epilepsy. Laws do not protect us from discrimination. My jobs are usually "eliminated". This protects the employer since I'm not fired due to my disability.
Can't really find support from the Epilepsy Center
That sounds very rude but some employers can be. I worked for 8 years which sometimes now seemed like torture. It was dry cleaners. I had a job of marking everything in on the computer but the “boss” could stress me out after I was there for sometime. I never got a vacation. I was employed by Vocational Rehabilitation so I thought it would work. She always made me look foolish. Finally I started having seizures there instead of waiting until I got home. And she fired me. Told me “we can’t have that here” I was so embarrassed and angry. But later I found out her business slowed down. They moved to another place, smaller. So, what she did was wrong. Don’t ever let anyone fire you—it’s in the law. You do have a right to work. Good luck and Blessings my friend.
Yes! I used to work for my provincial government in security. We all have a notebook to write down tbe occurances of the day. I ended up quitting after a year and a bit because of my managers complaining and making fun of the amount of info I wrote down (id often fill 20 pages a shift while people who have working memories were writting a page or 2).. I had an employment counsellor from Epilepsy Toronto contact them and explain the nature of my disability.... And suddenly they were making fun of that... It was just all too much...
