Do I Have To Pay For A Psychiatrist?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been considering this for a few years now.
For me it's nerve racking, lately I've been having problems with depression and anxiety etc.
I've mentioned it to my partner but he can't understand why I'd even think of seeing one...
I don't know.

Mental health is also extremely important along with physical health! And I've suffered with depression and anxiety even before epilepsy diagnosis and it plays along with seizures, so please don't feel bad about seeking mental health! Great big hugs for you!!

I've found that it's not needing too talk with someone but too have someone that is willing to listen instead of them just wanting a paycheck

A lot of people see psychiatrist. But is the anxiety from your epilepsy or other things? He or she may not understand how much anxiety comes with epilepsy
however, it never hurts to try and see what they have to say. Maybe your neurologist has a specific one

But does it really hurt to have someone to vent to about the depression? As an epileptic, you will probably have the depression forever, and a lot of people don't understand epilepsy. There is a very good chance a therapist/psychariatrist will. And besides, they can help with dealing with the aholes on the outside ("Facebook Doctors", people in your family, etc) who have NO clue how epilepsy affects a person, and others who have NO clue! I say one for years. And don't count on getting over the depression. I have had epilepsy since I was 13, and am 60 now and still deal with it.

I’m in the UK and my Dr recommended me to see a Psycologist. I find my sessions so helpful. There’s a lot I’ve bottled up and am now very anxious about now my Epilepsy has come back with avengence. Have a quiet seizure-free day everyone :-)
