What is a ketogenic diet? My neurologist said I should try it. I never heard of it.
It is a high fat and protein, no carbohydrate (think adkin's) diet. It trains the body to burn fat and process proteins more efficiently and it has been proven to be helpful in seizure control.
Months ago I started eating keto. It is a lifestyle change in what you eat, but it is much healthier then the standard american diet that is full of sugar and high in carbs. No one yet knows exactly how it helps to control seizures, but it does work for most people. For me I've found it has given me more energy and I have the best seizure control in decades. My seizures haven't stopped but I'm off some of my meds and have fewer seizures. It won't hurt you to try it and you can see if it works for you. This way of eating has been around for thousands of years. From what I understand about physiology and biology I believe our bodies were designed to burn fat for energy not sugars and carbs for energy.
You will not be starving on the ketogenic diet at all. You will be eating a lot of fat, but you will not get fat, because you are burning fat for your energy.
High fat diet
hay @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member that last couple of lines about not starving on keto diet, you have to starve on the keto. the ketogenic diet is starving yourself until you have ketosis. if you don't starve yourself first, you are getting the atkins diet or a strict atkins.
