Is It Safe For Someone Who Suffers From Grand Mal Seizures To Wear An Orthodontia Retainer?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am worried that my daughter will seize and dislodge her retainer, which she wears at night, and choke. Should she get a permanent retainer?

I have asked my sons neurologist but he didn't seem concerned. However, when he has a grand mal he struggles to breathe so it makes sense to me that anything in the mouth could hinder the breathing process.

I don't know about retainers though I had knocked out and swallowed a tooth during seizure. My dentist wasn't happy about putting a denture because of the risks you mentioned. What she wanted to do is a clear mouth guard contraption with a tooth painted on it! I ended up getting a little denture it has wires that holds it in position. I never wear it when sleeping or when not going out in public. Has the orthodontist dealt with other children with epilepsy? They might be the ones to ask

Thanks, I talked to the orthodontist today and he said not to worry about a retainer coming loose and choking her.

Thank you both. Yes the gasping, wheezing, coupled with foaming at the mouth kind of fresked me out at the thought of a retainer.
