Drivers License
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello, I need help as to how to get my drivers license back in California after the DMV said I couldn't drive because a neurologist reported to them. This was in 2015 and I have been seizure free for over a year. Does anyone know what I need to do to get my license back?

I live in CA and I am currently going through the same situation.... Evey State has different laws when it comes to their driving policies....CA State Law is that you need to be Seizure free for a minimum of 6months to even be considered for a review of your case by the DMV drivers safety department....we are considered a hazard on the road...After that, you give your neurologist a 7-page form, which I believe is available on their website, you fill out the first one and your Neuro fills out the remaining pages, your Neurologist must then submit the form to the CA DMV Driver Saftey Department, It takes several weeks even months for them to review you case....I recommend following up consistently, if you are approved, they will then schedule you take a written exam for your driver's permit in front of them, usually up to 2 months in advance. I am not sure what happens from that point....that is as far as I have made it...I am praying that the Universe and angels are watching out for me and that I will make it through my test with no issues so I can have my License to drive back.....I wish you the best of luck!!!!!

Your neurologist should be able to fill out a form and send it to DMV and you may have to take tests again. Check online to be sure. There should be a California DMV site to help you.

Here in VA... a Neuro has to sign off on papers certifying that you haven't had a seizure... most likely they'll want to do everything from blood tests to eegs... before they recommend you for driving again, since they can be sued if they say yes and you then have a seizure while driving...

In Ohio we have to have an annual approval/disapproval from your doctor that goes to the BMV.
Maybe you can call them and ask for the necessary paperwork to give your doctor.
