For Women Only. IUD?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've been thinking of getting an IUD, but am scared to because I heard you can get seizures from insertion. I have fairly good control of my seizures (8 months seizure free), and I'm currently taking @Lamotrigine. Another thing I'm scared of is that it can cause headaches and although mild, I'm still getting headaches as a side effect. Will they be amplified? Any other side effects I should worry about I should worry about? Help!

Update! I got the IUD today. The cramping sucks, but they're not… read more

If you are thinking about getting an IUD and are worried about possible side effects, check out the IUD called Paragard. It's hormone free and therefore, will not have any affect on your natural hormones. Another great thing about the Paragard is that it can stay in place for 12 years, the longest safe duration of any other IUD. I've had mine for almost 12 years with ZERO issues at all.

In my younger years I tried many different BC pills. I found that my body is very sensitive to hormones. Even the lowest estrogen BC on the market caused side effects that I could not tolerate. That's why my GYN suggested Paragard in the first place. I don't think that it has caused heavy periods for me. I have heavy periods on occasion, but I also have very light periods too. I think its related more to stress, and diet, like you suggested. Whatever you choose, just make sure its the right choice for you. Do the research, weigh the options, and pick what feels comfortable.

No further worries about taking Lamotrigine in terms of side effects. Besides mild headaches, there's nothing to worry about. Noteworthy : I've been taking it for 16 years. Just remember not to forget twice in two days. It caused me to have a grand mal.

I have had 2 IUDS with no trigger of a seizure (at least that I am aware of). Fortunately my OB GYN , neurologist and family doctor are all based out of the same building so everything is connected.

I also have Paragard because I know for a fact that hormones are one of my biggest triggers (the other biggest being stress...) and I haven't noticed an increase in headaches. Everyone's body is affected differently of course, but unless you're hormonally triggered and get a hormonal one (like Mirena), it shouldn't cause a seizure.
