VNS?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am considering asking my doctor about getting a VNS. I think my current medications have been working (ive been seizure free for 2 months), but I'm having really bad side effects with it. I don't want to change them because I don't want to have any more seizure right now. Anyway, I was thinking of asking my doctor about getting a VNS and I am wondering what testing they do before you get one? If any of you could share experience that would be nice. Thanks!

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member no it is not meant to be a cure only a form of treatment to help reduce the amount/length/&severity of your seizures. On the rare occasion it can completely make them go away but not to be expected!

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member... as of right now there has been really no change for me. However I guess I have noticed my auras have been shorter so maybe it's helping. It has been 3 months for me and I've only had it increased 2 times so I'm still at a really low level. For example my setting is at 1.0 amp she increases it by .25 amps each time. I know they can max out at 3.5 amps so I have awhile to go. I see an epileptologist so she books about 3 months out so I'm sure it's up to your Dr if he wants to see you sooner I think about every 6 weeks is normal! I don't mind the wait it helps my voice adjust a little better hope this helps don't hesitate to ask anymore questions

The VNS is nothing. They do a video eeg to being to see if you qualify for it. Not much more to that one. The brain surgery tests get intense. My big question was what will it effect. The brain works everything. Your hand movements, the way you talk etc. that is why the testing gets so intense. I became seizure free after it but we are all different. What works for me may not work for you.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I'm sure they were confused between the vns & the rns. I had a vns installed 3 months ago the only qualifications were more than 3 failed meds and a video eeg proof of epilepsy. The rns requires all that other testing
