Are you taking a daily supplement of Calcium? If not, you should be. Just be sure it's the Calcium with vitamin D. Also, you should take it with a meal for best absorption of the Vitamin.

Hi Alycia, i was on dilantin when i was younger but the biggest side effect is it destroys your gums and teeth so i went off it.. i'm hoping you get it under control.. maybe a diff. med would be better.. ask your doctor.. when i was a kid i'd get about 10 seizures a day.. now besides last month i had an easy 3 second seizure i am 7 years seizure free now.. i'm hoping to be able to help people with all my knowledge of epilepsy and what i went through for 41 years.. keep in touch... I just found out that I am considered as having osteoperosis from taking dilantin. The gums have had some deterioration but not the teeth so far. But my bones are apparently brittle.

If you've been told your bones are weakening, you need to start taking Calcium and vitamin D, however, you need to take the Calcium 2 hours before taking your Dilantin. It's also usually best if you take any Vitamins with food, because it's aids in better absorption of the vitamin. Good luck.

Does anyone know how long you'd have to be taking Dilantin to begin to experience the tooth and gum issues? Ive been on it 7 years. Im guessing that is long enough. Ive been told that my bones are weakening.
