How To Diagnose What Type Of Seizure A Person Has?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi Friends: Is there any way they can diagnose what type of seizures a person has without being in the hospital, hooked up to an EEG and being videoed until they have a seizure? Sometimes I go for months without having a seizure and it seems insane to have to be in the hospital for that long.

If you are on medication what the doctors will do is take you off of them during the eeg to see if it will induce the seizure. Or you can try looking into a MEG TEst I had it done a few years back its another way to induce the seizure try getting research and asking your dr about that test

I had Generalized Tonic-Clonic and Complex-Partial seizures, but now after surgery, the VNS, medications, AND Modified Atkins Diet I only have Complex-Partial seizures.

Think of the brain as a maze. They want to find where the seizures start. If it is just one location or multiple. Then, does it spread from point of origin to the other side of the brain or does it remain localized. Having this information helps them in treatment. Drugs effect different regions of the brain. If a patient only has seizures in one area and it does not spread then surgery may be an option for example..

but to answer your question NO. Not really. They may be able to make an educated GUESS depending on what functions are effected after the seizure. However they want concrete documented seizure activity before advancing to options such as surgery.

Oh now that im remembering from my eeg last week ... the eeg tracks abnormal brain waves so they may get a hint to where your seizures come from without you needing to have a seizure

I was diagnosed with a CAT scan, MRI and a normal EEG around 20 years ago.
My new neurologist redid all the tests (bar the CAT scan) last year and confirmed the diagnosis. He then did a PET scan as we are now looking towards surgery, and I am waiting to be booked in for the VEEG shortly.
