RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

has anyone received residential or intensive outpatient treatment for the psychiatric effects of their seizure disorder? My daughter is delusional, paranoid, has severe thought disorder, suicidal depression.....sometimes psychotic after a seizure. refuses hygiene, rarely changes clothes: beautiful young woman finished graduate school and came home with medication resistant epilepsy :-(

You need to do a couple of things .
1. Talk to the Neurologist about the treatments and meds she’s taking, they need to make sure, that the psychiatric drugs aren’t adding extra side effects, or reduce the working actions of the seizure meds.
2. If she was acting like this before she started seeing the psychiatrist, then you need to find out if her seizure meds are doing this to her.
3 does the Psychiatrist know about her Epilepsy?

There are a some AED seizure meds, that have the side effects of , paranoia and changing personality and emotions. You may even want to check on the side effects of all the meds she’s on. Check out www.drugs.com . You can look up all types of drugs.

All my meds say some possible side effects are depression and possible suicidal thoughts. My seizures were originally coming from the Right Temporal Lobe. The site they found was removed. However, I now know there are some in the Left Occipital Lobe. The Left is Dominant, so the tests showed another surgery was not going to happen. Having removed what was, though stopped possible mirror seizures on the Left, doing damage.

They put me on Epidiolex because I had seizures that were not controlled by any other medication or dosage. If I remember and avoid my Triggers, I am fine. My Doctor wants me to consider Assisted Living. I was with Dorothy, who looked after me for 8 years. She died a year ago this week. I am doing well with taking meds (I have a loud alarm) set to remind me. Nobody could be like Dorothy. Hiring an Aide to be with me at all times, or even a morning or afternoon would be expensive and pointless.

Because these are Absence Seizures, they were concerned I was having but forgetting small ones during the day. They were considering putting leads in my brain to keep track. However, when I wore the EEG Cap last, they found only 5-8 second events while I slept.

A few of sounds like some of the symptoms are possibly from medication side effects ( paranoia, delusions, suicidal depression, and behavior changes ) .You may want to read up the side effect of of your daughters’ meds.

Her suicidal depression , also may not be from her meds . It could be possibly that it’s actually her going through a major Depression too, struggling with her epilepsy.

There are many symptoms that can be from both our Epilepsy and meds at the same time. But her Psychotic behavior after her seizure is more Epilepsy related. The area of her seizures, are triggering her to act that way. Some people may come out of their seizures angry and mad, some may cry, some may feel depressed, and some of us may not do any of those after a seizure. Your daughter acts her when coming out of her seizure. Maybe give her a little time to settle down and gather her thoughts back.

When I read up on medications and their side effects , I always go to
www.drugs.com.

See if any of her meds or med , that she’s on has the side effects that matches any of the symptoms you mentioned above .
