Epilepsy Putting A Strain On Relationships?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I've been very lucky and found someone who is very accepting of my condition. He works in the medical field so I think he has a better understanding given that he is exposed to it at his work. We began living together about a year ago, during my time of transitioning from my home to his I was under a lot of stress and began having breakthrough episodes after being 2 years seizure free. I was switched from Zonegram to Lamictal, ever since I feel like a brand new person. My question is, for those… read more

Yes but you have to learn how to control your anger by tools like counting back from ten. I know it sounds childish but it works especially if you stop right where you are and close your eyes and count backwards breathing slowly as you go. As for the crying find the thing that makes you most happy and when ever you get like that use it as your guide to pull you through. For me it is holding my children.

You are lucky. I had a 12 year marriage to someone I thought was understanding of my epilepsy. He too was a medical professional. But guess what, he allowed me to be seizing, unconscious, no food, no water for four days, finally my son called an ambulance. I almost died. I think he wanted the insurance money. I am suffering from PTSD from the incident two years ago. I live alone now and feel safer than when I was with him.

Yes I have had the same issues. When I first started on Lamictal they also put me on Concerta for ADHD and Bi-Polar disorder, there is a chance that Concerta could help you as well. It helped me a lot when I was on it. I know that when I stopped taking it I got angry and cried a lot more then when I was on it. Just contact your Dr n have a serious discussion bout it. Good luck hun.

There are many meds out there that can do that to, and make us emotional in different ways. Like NicN said you might want to talk to your Dr. About it.

You can mention this to your neuro or even your regular Dr. I have to take a small dose of zoloft to even me out. It does wonders. Good luck to you
