Teaching And Epilepsy
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm training to be a teacher and I was wondering if anyone is a teacher and has epilepsy? Is it difficult to manage your epilepsy and your job?

I've find it difficult with the early mornings because my seizures occur when I'm tired. My plan is to finish my first year of teaching and see if my health has declined or improved at all really

I have been a teacher for 28 years now and love it. And yes you can manage your stress. I taught 4 yr olds and kinder. Also second grade. Now I teach science to all the levels. I have many other jobs too at schools and my epilepsy does not hold me back.
You continue your studies !!

Sorry to hear this.. I have insomnia and complex partial seizures.. it's not a picnic dealing with this.. I don't teach but am a single mom of 2 so I have to be careful.. as soon as my kids are asleep I lie down.. I use some hypnosis (suggested from a friend) it does good.. plus I read sometimes.. I try some relaxed breathing and turn off all stimulates.. it works about 80% of the time.. hope this helps alittle..

I don’t keep my condition a secret. And all our teachers know what to do if I hv s siezure at school. It takes the fear away. For all involved. And I love educating others. I include it as part of our teacher mandatory first aid class. I always bring up the topic of what to do if someone is having a seizure.

When I was teaching preschool and kinder for many years a taught a few kids how to push the button on the wall and ask for help if anything every happened to thier teacher. It was an intercom system that called the office. Each class had one.
