6 Month Old Just Been Diagnosed With Epilepsy And Is On Keppra
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi I'm new to all this and absolutely terrified :(
My baby boy has just started having what we think are focal seizures. He spent 2 weeks in hospital having tests and all came back normal except EEG shows epileptic activity on the right side of his brain and occasionally in the left. They have put him on keppra and I'm scared of side effects and long term affects!! It's hard to tell if it's keppra or his age! Please help

Hi. My daughter started the seizures at 6 months also. She started breath holding seizures and absence seizures at 2 weeks but they got worse and became grandmal (clonic/tonic) at 6 months of age. I fought like hell to get doctors to listen to me! They kept saying it didn't look like seizures because every test came back negative! They are full blown arms legs stiffen whole body convulses foams at the mouth stops breathing normally clustered (has multiple) grand mal seizures. we were in the hospital multiple times and multiple tests. They wouldn't believe me. Three weeks ago she almost died. She was rushed to hospital and kept having them 9 total before meds finally stopped them. Ended up in ICU for 5?days before she came out of it they gave her so much medicine. So they finally at 13 months of age believe me now and said she's having grandmal seizures. We are finally on meds. We started Keppra. Also told the best out there for babies and seizures. She has these Keppra rage fits too and doesn't sleep hardly at all now. So the doctor just added daily b6 to stop the anger relax her and help her sleep. I've heard many success stories with the combo of Keppra and b6. My advice find another neuro! Get another opinion. I'm seeing my 7th opinion next week to get a fresh set of eyes on the case and see if there is something we are not seeing. I demanded a Ct which led to MRI and we found extra fluid on her brain which she will outgrow. Nothing serious they said but was good to know. Fight like hell and find a team of docs to listen to you and help! It is the scariest thing I've ever done! I hate it! Talk about it a lot and get a support system to help you keep it together. Because it will drain you physically and mentally. Watch him much closer and journal everything that seems off to you. Record what you can and follow mommy instinct! Prayers for you!

I was six months when I started seizing and now I'm almost 20. But through the challenges of epilepsy I've taken many meds and I have to say keppra was very effective for me

I also take the keppra generic. I don't think it matters if it's generic or not, I've heard people refer to it as keppra rage. I experienced it a lot til I had brain surgery. I don't seem to have the side effects like I use to but it is very common!!!

The rage won't go away, even after they get older and switch them over to other drugs like Dilantin or Tegretol as they start going throug developmental stages. It's focus will just change. I only know this because I've had epilepsy for 37 years now and I started on Keppra.
