I Have Difficulty Swallowing My Meds...I Take Many. Is There Anything That Could Make This Easier?

Does anyone have any tips to make swallowing pills easier?

I have found it to be easier if I take a sip of water first (to help sort of glide things down easier), then I tip my head back, as if I were looking up at the stars, and down the hatch. Another thing that I have found is that the stronger the dose, the larger the pill. For example, the 250mg pills of Depakote are about half the size of the 500mg ones. You might consider asking your doctor to change the dose of your pills -- NOT the dose you're prescribed.
Ex: I take 2000mg of Depakote per day, so if I had a hard time swallowing pills, I would ask my doctor to prescribe the 260mg pills. The downside is that now I'd have to take 4 pills in the morning and 4 pills in the evening, but they are no longer horse pills. Hope this is helpful to those who have difficulty with horse pills - or pills in general. 💊💊💊

Some medicines you can not crush so make for sure that you read the label on ur medicine to see if u can crush it.... If it doesn't say I definitely would call the pharmacy and ask them. My grandmother had trouble swallowing her meds and she would drop her meds in a spoonful of pudding and take it that way.. If ur meds can be taken with food. There are also liquid forms of some medicine so consult your doctor or pharmacy about that to see if any that you take comes in liquid form..I know Keppra does.

Take them slowly

Take them individually, with a sip before and after each pill. If this doesn't help, try taking in a spoonful of pudding, applesauce, or a similar soft food. Most meds are not meant to be crushed, so check with your pharmacist prior to doing so.

I couldn't hardly take even the smallest of pills. Since being on the "horse pills" I've been on for almost a year I cab swallow all of them at once. I tricked myself. It is all about trusting yourself and relaxing the throat muscle. Focus on that and know it will be okay. And bam! Swallowed! And on with my day. Hope maybe this helps you
