A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭
Chattanooga, TN

Hello to all, I would like to ask a question concerning the affects of VNS surgery and if it works well. I know that I have aura's every time prior to a seizure, and I think that's the device you use in order to bring things back to normal. I'll do a little research into it myself. Right now I'm just waiting to hear back from the insurance coverage and how that would work. 😀

Thanks

I’ve had one in me since 2011.I have had 6 replacements since then.I think it helps some for me but it really depends on what type of seizures and how bad you have epilepsy.for me it is not a cure.it may be for others, but I will do anything to help.Good luck!

Everyone react differently to the VNS. It works good or great for many people. Others it may not work well, like myself.

If it is reducing your seizures, then it’s working well. There is no guarantee that it will make you seizure free. You could still have seizures. But, not as much as you did before.

A couple of side effects you may experience after the procedure, is :
1.. might feel like your voice sounds off , when talking.
2. My have a sore throat .

These will last for a short period of time, until you throat get use to it.

I myself once had the VNS. I didn’t have any luck with it so I chose to have another surgery getting it removed because it stuck out my chest. I also didn’t like how the vibration would tickle my throat and make me cough.

The Epilepsy Foundation website will give You good information. I have had the VNS for several years. It has worked for me, it did not completely end a seizure, but the feeling a seizure was lessened. When I did have small seizures that did not have much feeling to them were eliminated, they may not have really ended in my brain but the feeling was gone. When I applied the 🧲 magnet it did help me. If You have absence seizures and another person is close by they may be able to slide the magnet across the VNS. The Foundation will give You better information about its size etc. If You want more information from me send an email.
