All AED's have unpleasant side effects - from psychological to physical such as weight gain and weakness.
If there is no evidence that they are improving your epilepsy, would you follow the safe doctor's legal approach and stay on meds, or simply wean yourself off them and see if something bad happens in the future.
Prescribing AED's is basically like throwing a variety of things at a wall in the hope that one will stick. It's not much more advanced than that.

I was on Zarontin, Penobarbitol, Tegretol, and all the other AED meds. That is why I had Temporal Lobectomy on the right side years ago. I was walking on a main street in the heat and had a large Seizure, went to the ER. I would rather deal with side effects and stay on a combination and dosage that works.
If the meds aren’t working, then it’s probably time to get a second opinion. I’m not sure whether you already do or not but a specialist should be the one making the decisions about what meds you're on not a Doctor. A doctor can only really make dosage changes not decisions on what meds you take. Generally, as a rule of thumb, you would need three med changes before they would say meds maybe are not going to be the best option.
