How Long On Average Does It Take To Recover From A Grand Mal Seizure?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My husband had his 2nd Grand Mal Seizure on Sunday afternoon, he has slept since then only waking for meds, bathroom, and to eat what little I could feed him. He is very altered cognitively and has pain on left side of head. Balance is non-existent. Needless to say I haven't slept since Saturday night...

For me, I would usually black out for 10-20 minutes. Then I could see and hear but not talk yet. That would take another 20-30 minutes.

Fortunately for me, after several years, my doctors have finally got me onto a drug regime that has all my daytime tonic/clonic (Grand Mal) seizures under control and I now "only" have them at night but, when I was having them in the daytime, I would often sleep for up to 3 days afterwards, would have a very badly bitten tongue - I still have this with my nocturnal tonic/clonic ones; I would find it difficult to speak fluently or I'd talk rubbish (more than usual!!). I would have no appetite, have a very bad headache and my balance was non-existent. That sounds very much like your description of your husband's situation. I don't know if it will help you much but although I still have seizures, albeit nocturnal which still have their side-effects , life with the meds which control my daytime ones, is a whole different ball game. So, hopefully, your specialists will find a way to get at least a degree of control over your husband's health in the not too distant future.

I had these and each on is unique. The first one I had I couldn't see and vision was blurred and I passed out for a day. They had to medicate me because it resulted in me being up for 92 hours and the doctors freakout out and said you must sleep now.

I also had other ones where I would wake up and not be aware where I am at.

I also know they were coming because my face would get numb and my speech would be slurred.

I think the worst is when you wake up and are not aware where you are at until you come around.

I haven't had one now for over 4 years and they stopped ALL meds gradually.
