How Long Does It Normally Take To Regain Consciousness After A Seizure Has Ended?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My seizures last about 5 minutes (or less), although the seizure stops I still remain unconscious for long (anything between 10-40 minutes), should someone seek medical assistance or is it best to just to just wait it out. My neurologist says there is nothing they can do so best just to wait. It’s a terrible feeling and it’s a struggle to regain consciousness, move my limbs and open my eyes. I just want a second opinion to set my husband at ease when it happens.

I have always had someone with me who understands what is going on. I wouldn’t want to be alone after a seizure. My son is the best. Very calm, very reassuring, and acts like we have all the time in the world. Part of the reason is because I blow a lot of spit bubbles and my son is entertained by that more than anything. Lasts usually about 30-45 minutes.

Any seizure timed at 5 minutes or longer the person observing should call 911. The unconsciousness is not abnormal after one, but it isn't actually being unconscious, it is your brain resetting(best way to put it). I guarantee you can hear, and feel the "vibrations" of those around you disturbing the air around you

I believe coming back-to depends upon the severity of the seizure. "Consciousness" after a seizure is an iffy term. Severe seizures leave me incapacitated for days. Just because I know my name again doesn't mean your cognitive skills will return at the same time. It could take hours, or sometimes days before you feel well enough to handle on your own again. Not being able to drive sucks, especially when you're in the countryside with no public transportation. But I'd feel horrible if I hurt someone in an accident due to having a seizure

One of my "secret" recipes for regaining awareness after a seizure is Cannabis. I am pretty out of sorts when I finish seizing, and there always seems to be some amnesia at play. My mom will keep asking if I know her name, or if I know my name. Once I remember, she knows it's time for the ReAL medicine to do its work. Good tasty chronic is a mind saver, literally, especially for us epileptics. Just one hit from a glass bowl and she says the awareness comes right back into my head and she can see the conscious return in my eyes. O N E dose, that's all it takes for me 🗣️💨
