If I Can Go Two Years Without A Seizure Will I Be Cured Of Epilepsy?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi! I recently got diagnosed and I've been doing some research. I found an article that said if I go without a seizure for two years I won't need to take medication anymore and will essentially be cured. How true is this?

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , Don’t believe everything you read. Whoever wrote the article probably doesn’t know much about Epilepsy. From my experience, once you have seizures there will always be that small chance you could have another one no matter how long you’ve gone without one. Several years ago I had gone about 8 to 10 years without a seizure & my Pediatric Neurologist thought I had grown out of my seizures & so he slowly took me off my medicine. Then I saw a Urologist for an overactive bladder & he put me on a pill called Elavil & while on that pill I had my first seizure in 8 to 10 years. Since I had gone so long without a seizure I began to wonder if the Elavil could’ve had something to do with that particular seizure & so I looked at the side effects & sure enough it had a side effect of seizures & till this day I bet that Elavil probably caused that particular seizure. I’ve been back on meds ever since. My Mom & I were so sure that we had told that Urologist about my seizures. Then another time I went 2 years without a seizure & then had one & since then my seizures occur every year, with some happening 2 months in a row & then maybe going 3 months without one & then another one comes. They just vary. But no matter how long you’ve gone without a seizure, I think there will always be that possibility of having another. No matter what kind of doctor you see, always tell them about your seizures so they won’t prescribe you anything that has a side effect of seizures. Your friend in Texas, Becky

I was told epilepsy at this time does not have a cure. However, companies are always working to test new medications. I would have to question the article and the person who wrote it.

I think 2 years is the time frame for being classed as in remission, But technically your never completely free of seizures.

Just keep in mind epilepsy is medically determined to be an incurable but treatable disease.
