Why Do Many Medications Seem To Be Sodium Based?

A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Many of my meds seem to be sodium based. When you're supposed to be on a low salt/low sodium diet this makes every meal a struggle.

Talk to your doc, but as I understand seizure control operates on one of 3 "channels" one of those are sodium. I'm guessing that's a good place to start investigating.

You're personal perspective makes sense simply because of medical reasons from the actual medical professionals who say we need some sodium however we also need to keep our sodium at a safe level

This is a common additive in most seizure medications. That is why the doctors are always telling us to change our diets and try to have less salt in our foods. At first it was hard but what I learned to do is when I eat fast food instead of getting the whole meal take something off of the meal and instead of soda change it for water or seltzer water (it kills two birds with one stone, less salt and less sugar). When at home and cooking sacrifice some of the amount of salt you usually put for an herb or spice. There are so many herbs that make the salt flavor stand out.
