Has Anyone Experienced A Significant Increase In Frequency And Severity Of Seizures With Perimenopause?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am 100% positive that hormones are playing a huge factor in both the frequency and intensity of my seizures but I’m not sure where to start to address it. If anyone has any suggestions, PLEASE let me know!

I’m now through the menopause, however, when I ovulated I’d always have a “tummy turn” as I’d call them. Through the menopause and my seizures are worse! Stress has always been a trigger and I’ve been going through the “divorce from Hell” from an alcoholic since 2014, so I’ve been stressed for the last 9 years. Eventually, though, I have a great Dr, she seems to be getting the right mix of anti-D’s and anti-Epilepsy meds. Michele x

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I normally would go to bed in my PJ pants & a t-shirt but sometimes I’m having to use lighter PJ clothing & use my PJ shorts & the PJ top & it’s like a baseball type of jersey PJ shirt & it’s a lighter weight shirt & so most of the time I’m having to go to bed in that unless I end up a short time later changing clothes unless it’s nice & cool in the house. When this all started I didn’t know what was going on & it was at night before I went to bed & my Mom & stepdad had already gone to bed & I got to feeling really bad & so hot. An ice pack might help keep with you at night & then if you get to hot you have it right there to use. I do that & have used my ice pack. I also keep a ponytail holder with me all the time cause sometimes when trying to sleep I get so hot I have to get my hair off my neck & so sometimes I end up putting my hair up in a ponytail. I always sleep with my desktop fan on high, that’s nothing new but I don’t want it blowing right on me. Welcome to the site. Your friend in Texas, Becky

Thank you! Yes, I have the awful hot flashes too. I wake up drenched in sweat. I know the lack of sleep is also contributing to the seizures. It’s all very new and very scary to me. 😥

Hi @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I’m 44 & began peri menopause in October 2021 & experienced awful hot flashes & missed cycles from October to December & then in January 2022 things were back to normal. Then in September 2022 the hot flashes & missed cycles started again & have continued since. The flashes are off & on but I now take an ice pack with me to bed every night & put it on my neck if I get to hot. The hot flashes were getting so bad that they were interrupting my sleep but luckily the hot flashes have calmed down but I still haven’t had a cycle since August 2022. In January 2023 I had a phone appointment with my Neurologist & told her about the peri menopause & these awful hot flashes interrupting my sleep & that I was concerned with missing so much sleep that it might cause a seizure & she recommended seeing an OBGYN & that they could prescribe something to help me. So maybe you could get some help from an OBGYN. Good luck. Your friend in Texas, Becky

I started with seizures just as I was coming out of menopause at 54. I’m going to be 64 in June. All of my family and friends as well as myself think my epilepsy was brought on by a hormonal change. I have them every 4 to 6 weeks. And have multiple. I have refractory epilepsy. I am followed by Mayo Clinic and they do not think it is hormonal. I however feel it plays a part. My seizures are my new period. Instead a menstruating I am seizurating.
