Cognitive Remediation
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My cognition is getting worse and worse with my epilepsy. Has anyone had professional cognitive remediation, and if so, did it help? I'm aware that dementia is linked to long term intractable epilepsy. Trying everything to keep the cognition from getting even worse. Thanks!

I agree whole heartedly with you TinaDouglass. Fatigue ensues exhaustion, and that lack of available energy for our physical & mental processes can make the simplest of things overwhelming and then we reach a "burnout". That's when I lose my temper and need some valium and/or just go to sleep. I find it extremely helpful taking a multitude of breaks throughout the day, even if it's just closing your eyes and enjoying a few deep breaths for 5 minutes. Individuals with brain malfunctions use their mind and brains more than uninjured or "normal" people. This causes more fatigue because it uses more energy, thus resulting in burnout faster than others. Rest is S O very important for epileptics. And I'm talking about that GOOD rest, like uninterrupted sleep (HUH??? What's THaT??? lol....) I use sound therapy when I sleep. There is a ton of content out there, especially on YouTube, involved with better sleep strategies. Healing tones (Solfeggio Frequencies), isochronic tones, waves, rain, binaural beats (which is one of my favorites) are just to name a few. Research it a little bit, it's not very difficult to understand once you know about it, and test them out

I know what you are speaking of. Symptoms that are secondary to refractory epilepsy (such as cognitive decline, dementia, and speech problems a.k.a. Aphasia) are known as Epileptic Encephalopathies which are proven to get worse over time as seizures continue. I experience a list of them as well. There aren't many studies out there related to seizures and the cognitive deficits but they are known to exist. The only remedies out there so far are the basic therapies used for Alzheimer's and schizophrenia cases. I find continually using and practicing those skill deficits have helped in lessening their severity. As the saying goes "If you don't use it, you lose it" holds very well to be true. It is also extremely helpful to practice Self Love, Compassion, and Self Forgiveness as well as patience, patience, PaTieNce...
