My Neurologist Is Considering Switching My Meds From Phenobarbital And Dilantin To Keppra. I'm Not Sure I Want Her To.
I have heard Keppra can mess with your personality. I have also heard that it's not the best option for patients over 65. Can anyone in that age group who takes it tell me of your experience with it?
Thank you.
Everyone reacts differently to the side effects with meds . Yes Keppra can change you behavior, but like myself, I don’t experience that with Keppra and I’m on a high dose.
If you experience bad side effects with any new medication, let the Dr, know. He/she may try you on a new med.
Proud TX,
Thanks for your input.
You're right. Dilantin messes up your teeth and gums. With me it's mainly my gums.
Another side effect of Dilantin is it can cause osteoporosis, which I have. The damage is already done.
I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your dad. I also have grand mal seizures, like he did.
I am intrigued by the hereditary aspect of epilepsy. (My younger daughter used to experience absence seizures but she outgrew them.) I used to feel so guilty because I felt her seizures were my fault. Sorry. I digressed.
I already have trouble sleeping. Example: It's 3:09 A.M. on a Saturday here but I can't sleep. I'll either be up all day or doze off for a few hours.
I think at this point that my main worry is Keppra won't be strong enough. I'm tired already. I don't need Keppra to zonk me out.
I need to research why it's not recommended for those over 65. I probably missed the reason.
Thank you again, Becky. BTW my younger Daughter's name is Bekki.

PS This is a new neurologist. I switched to her because the last one nearly put me into a coma.
Just remember that most side effects are potential side effects. And here are the links to the details of potential side effects from Keppra: https://www.drugs.com/sfx/keppra-side-effects.html
And here is the link with all of the other details on Keppra: https://www.drugs.com/keppra.html
I think it is best to ask questions like why the Dr thinks the med is better for ya. And weigh the options side effects vs benefits and also know that one person might have awesome results the next might have zero results
And when you do tell us I for one would love to hear that ya stood up for yourself even if the Dr still changes the med.
Does Anyones Eyes Hurt After Having A Seizure?
I'm Currently Tapering Off Phenobarbital After Over 50 Years Taking It. I'm Tapering 16 Mg Every Otherday. Anyone Else Try This? Scared.
